https://english.uark.edu/Summary of Job Duties:The Department of English in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas, invites applications for a one-year full-time non-tenure track Visiting Assistant Professor in Early-Modern British literature to start in August 2024. This is a standard nine-month faculty appointment.

The successful applicant can expect to teach two courses per semester, including "Introduction to Shakespeare," a graduate course on Shakespeare, an upper-level undergraduate Special Topics course, and a survey of early British literature. Applicants with an interest in Gender Studies, Film/Media Studies, History of the Book, Race and Periodization, Global and/or Transatlantic Perspectives are especially welcomed.

The University of Arkansas has a vibrant community of premodernists and an active program in Medieval and Renaissance Studies that sponsors reading groups, conferences, and a colloquium series. The University of Arkansas, ranked as a "Research 1" doctoral university with very high research activity by the Carnegie Foundation, is the flagship university in the state system. In addition to teaching duties, the successful applicant will be expected to pursue an active program of research and contribute to the institution's research mission as well as perform academically related service. We seek a candidate with a strong and developing national reputation, achieved through a compelling research record; one who demonstrates curiosity in emerging technologies and novel approaches to traditional methods.

Duties include designing graduate and undergraduate courses, providing curriculum material, constructing syllabi, leading classroom instruction, writing and administering exams, coaching students in the writing of essays, and mentoring and evaluating students.

Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

Minimum Qualifications:

With submitted materials, the candidate must demonstrate:

  • Ph.D. in English or closely related field from an accredited institution of higher education conferred by the start of appointment

  • An active research agenda

  • A commitment to exceptional inclusive teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level

  • At least one year college-level experience teaching in English literature or related field

  • Evidence of ability to provide service to the University and the profession

  • Demonstrated evidence of strong interpersonal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest or experience in interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and/or cross-campus collaborations

  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective undergraduate and graduate classes that complement the current course catalog

  • Demonstrated interest or research in Gender Studies, Film/Media Studies, History of Books, Race and Periodization, Global and/or Transatlantic Perspectives
