vdl.uada.eduSummary of Job Duties:The Agriculture Laboratory Technician will assist with and perform procedures for conducting animal disease diagnostic testing in the UADA Leland Tollett Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Responsibilities include:
*performing building and equipment cleaning and maintenance, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, scrubbing, washing and disinfecting floors and work surfaces, waste disposal, occasional grounds cleaning and maintenance, performing maintenance and repair of facilities and equipment, and scheduling of major repairs.
*assisting with animal necropsies including animal receiving, handling and moving animal carcasses, pathology specimen handling and sample collection, cleaning and disinfecting the necropsy area, incineration and disposal of pathological waste, and incinerator operation, cleaning, and maintenance. Procedures require moderate to heavy lifting, walking on wet surfaces, use of cutting instruments such as knives and saws, use of a hoist, and handling of disease-causing agents.
*performing routine laboratory duties including assist with reagent and media preparation, inventory and restocking of lab supplies, labelling specimen containers, and assisting with collection of specimens.
*assist in other areas of the laboratory as needed including assist with receiving of samples, preforming minor clerical tasks, moving furniture and equipment, etc.
*perform other duties as assigned.

The Agriculture Laboratory Technician will be required to participate in the laboratory's Rabies Protection Program by obtaining rabies vaccinations and having protective antibody titers monitored routinely, which will be paid for by the laboratory.
The Agriculture Laboratory Technician will be required to participate in laboratory quality and safety programs, ensuring compliance and documentation of procedures to provide the highest level of client services and quality laboratory results.Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications
The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience handling animal carcasses or performing necropsy examinations (i.e. animal autopsies).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic principles of infectious disease prevention and decontamination is necessary, as the technician will be handling infected animal specimens and cleaning facilities and equipment potentially contaminated by infectious disease agents. Ability to clean and decontaminate the facility and equipment. Ability to move heavy objects with assistance or with a hoist. Ability to provide minor maintenance and repair of building and equipment. Ability to assist with or perform standard laboratory tests.
