https://fcss.uark.edu/Summary of Job Duties:As a peer mentor with FCSS, your primary responsibility involves conducting telephone outreach and mentoring sessions for commuting freshmen. This entails making numerous phone calls, averaging about 9 calls per hour, as well as leaving voicemails, sending follow-up emails, scheduling meetings, and arranging in-person sessions with students. Additionally, meticulous logging of all outreach and mentoring activities is required.

Peer mentors are also expected to attend at least one Fall 2024 University Perspectives (FC 360) class: Tuesdays at 9:30 am and 12:30 pm, and Wednesdays at 3:05 pm. One-on-one mentoring will be provided on an as-needed basis or as requested by freshman commuters.

As a peer mentor with FCSS, you will conduct telephone outreach and mentoring to a cohort of around 100 freshman commuters each semester.
This will involve:
- making hundreds of phone calls (average 9 calls per hour)
- leaving voicemails
- sending follow-up emails
- scheduling meetings
- meeting with students in-person
- logging all outreach and mentoring

Peer mentors are also required to attend at least 1 Fall 2024 University Perspectives (FC 360) class (Tu 9:30 am, Tu 12:30 pm, Wed 3:05 pm).

One-on-one mentoring will take place as needed or requested by freshman commuters.

LOCATION:
All work is on-campus.
- in-class mentoring (classroom TBD)
- phone outreach and mentoring ARKU 628 Commuter Lounge "phone camp"
- one-on-one mentoring ARKU 602 Commuter Lounge

SCHEDULE:
Required paid training -
- Aug 6-9, 2024, 10 AM- 3PM

Required paid ConnectU attendance and mentoring
- Thursday August 15 between 9 am and 6 pm
- Sunday August 18 between 11 am and 5 pm

Required weekly UP class preparation
- 30 minutes, day and time TBD

Required meeting with graduate assistant mentor every two weeks
- 30 minutes, day and time TBD

Maximum 8 hours per week between 9AM and 5PM, Monday-Thursday.

No evening work.
Weekend work is ONLY required on Sunday August 18.

Freshman Commuter Student Success is a retention initiative of the department of Student Affairs Retention and Outreach (SARO).

FCSS mentors are expected to conduct themselves in a manner befitting champions and advocates of equitable educational access.

Mentors are expected to be respectful of all students, staff, faculty and guests regardless of gender, sex, race, ethnicity, culture, nationality, age, body type, ability or disability, sexual orientation, gender expression, religion, economic status, or other identifiers.

FCSS mentors are also expected to positively represent the University of Arkansas, SARO, and FCSS on campus, in class, and in the community.Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled full or part-time at the University of Arkansas

  • Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate rising sophomore, junior, or senior

  • Maintain 3.2 cumulative GPA or above

  • Customer service excellence must have "above and beyond" work ethic

  • Thorough and attentive to detail

  • Desire and willingness to mentor students over the telephone

  • Ability and willingness to patiently lead mentees through learning processes involving campus technology and resources, time management and study skills, scholarships and financial aid, self-care, accountability, and other processes that impact student success.

  • Experience in an office setting and basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

  • Experience and facility with (or willingness to learn about) basic FAFSA and other financial aid processes

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience as a freshman commuter student

  • Previous experience with high volume phone outreach (e.g. telephone polling, telemarketing, recruitment)

Salary Information:

$13.00 per hour
