Summary of Job Duties:Position Summary: The Academic Advisor assists with academic and career advising and planning, registration, graduation application processes, special events, and recruitment and retention functions. The position reports to the College of Arts and Sciences Advising Center director.Qualifications:

Required Education and/or Work Experience: Bachelor's degree. Two years of experience in higher education administration working directly with students.

Preferred Education and/or Work Experience: Candidates with professional work experience in academic advising, career planning, enrollment, instructional technology, student records, admissions, or financial aid. Banner experience.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the guidance of the advising director, academic advisors have the following responsibilities:

  • Completes a range of advising, recruitment, and retention tasks
  • Assist students with major, course selection, and graduation requirements while providing career counseling and academic advising assistance
  • Completes graduation applications
  • Implements assessment of academic advising system that makes efficient use of the EAB tools (SAP academic plans, advising rosters, registration for special groups, add/drops, course substitutions, financial aid warning, ROAR First-Year Advising Center advising transition check-ins, transfer check-ins, and special populations throughout the semester for a more holistic advising experience, etc.)
  • Maintains an effective communication system with students
  • Creates alerts in Navigate and records advising notes in Navigate
  • Maintains student records (increasingly electronically)
  • Reviews students' academic standing for possible intervention, support, and referrals.
  • Be aware of the unique advising and career counseling needs of diverse subpopulations of students
  • Manages faculty advising rosters and assigns/reassigns students to faculty advisors.
  • Conducts online advising with distance learners
  • Promotes and maintains a working knowledge of current career exploration and employment trends
  • Assists with special events and retention functions to ensure student success
  • Assists with data collection for the Academic Advising Center and assists the College with assessment, research, reports, and special projects
  • Provides updated copies of faculty advising rosters to department heads/chairs
  • Notifies department heads/chairs of all transfer students by major in CAS in the fall and spring semesters
  • Works with the advising director to maintain a social media presence for CASAC
  • Understands the legal guidelines of advising (privacy regulations and confidentiality)
  • Prepares bi-weekly reports of activities for the Advising Director and Associate Dean
  • Advises students who are returning from probation and suspension in their assigned majors
  • Advises transfer and readmitted students in their assigned majors
  • Participates in professional development activities

Other Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Other duties as assigned.

Responsible for maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating to foster teamwork and provide leadership to subordinates. Requires consistent on-time attendance.

Working Relationships: They work collaboratively with the Office of Admissions, the ROAR First Year Advising Center, the Center for Student Success and Retention, and the UAFS Academic Advising Council to ensure that students have a comprehensive, professional, and personalized advising experience. Advisors also work with academic support services across campus that assist students in developing time management skills, writing and reading skills, and other skills-based attributes.
