Job purpose:

As the Head of Vaccines (Vx) CMC Project and Portfolio Management you are accountable for all operational aspects of Vx CMC project and portfolio delivery internally and externally including budget, risk, resourcing, planning, reporting and strategic capability development.

This role will support effective project delivery of Technical Research and Development facilitating project budget, resourcing and prioritization decision making.

This role will ensure that the Technical Development Leaders have the operational project and portfolio support to focus upon the scientific leadership and technical strategy of our projects.

This is an exciting and influential role at the heart of vaccine development. It requires an innovative and natural leader with a passion for delivery and a proven capability to drive enterprise project and portfolio leadership across enterprise global organization whilst coaching and leading senior level staff.

Your responsibilities:

As the Head of Vx CMC Project and Portfolio Management you will:

  • Be accountable for operational project execution across the Vaccines CMC portfolio in Technical RandD; Accountability includes but is not limited to budget, risk, resourcing, planning, reporting and strategic capability development;

  • Be accountable to provide timely, accurate and fully digitized portfolio information and data such that TRD staff can:

(a) prepare for and deliver a prioritized set of Vx CMC project activities to meet the agreed portfolio objectives;

(b) contribute effectively to portfolio and project decision-making at governance, in the project teams and in the functional lines; and

(c) optimize resource prioritization and strategic capability and capacity planning

  • Develop a best-in-class multidisciplinary global team of Technical Project Managers, Strategic and Tactical leaders and Portfolio Analysts to deliver scope of the organization;

  • Guide teams through the initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and control and close out phases of the project, following GSK standard of excellence in project management;

  • Be accountable to ensure projects are adopting the latest ways of working and technologies including but not limited to digitalization, data analytics, smart risk taking etc.

  • Be accountable for the compliance and quality of the project delivery (including, but not limited to: risk management, audit support, following compliance procedure, etc.)

  • Drive development of guidance documents, standard tools for plan management, team management and resource management in order to drive continuous improvement across the project management community.

  • Level of this role: Director

  • Reporting line: Senior Director - Head Vx CMC Technical Development Delivery, located in the US (EST)

  • People management: 15-20 direct reports

  • Business travel requirements: 10% - 25% depending on the geographical location of the candidate

Why You?

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Masters in Life sciences, chemistry or bio/chemical engineering

  • Areas of specialization Life sciences, chemistry or bio/chemical engineering; Project management

  • 10+ years in a vaccines or biopharma environment

  • 10+ years-experience in project and portfolio management

  • 5+ years in transversal function or team management

  • Demonstrated knowledge of all relevant components of project management, including management of scope, time, cost, quality, integration, influence and negotiation, communications, risk, and scenario planning across all project management focus areas, namely initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling, and closing of projects (i.e. strong theoretical knowledge).

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence matrix projects teams in the design and execution of project plans including utilization of resources (headcounts and budget)

  • Demonstrated ability in relevant soft skills including change management, continuous improvement, conflict resolution, coaching and consensus building.

  • Proven track record in complex strategy development and excellence in implementation.

  • Be a performance-driven individual, with a strong sense of urgency, exceptional organizational credibility, and deep understanding of the business.

  • Written and spoken fluency in English required.

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • PhD in Life sciences, chemistry or bio/chemical engineering

  • Development and manufacturing experience

  • Experience in CMC Development (Early Phase, Late Phase or Lifecycle)

  • PMP, APM or PRINCE2 certification

  • Experience in Agile and latest techniques/technologies

  • Experience in Procurement, Finance and Risk Management

  • Experience in leading global team in a multi-cultural setting and across geographic boundaries

  • Communication, networking and influencing skills with proven ability to obtain buy-in to new proposals across all levels of the organization, from senior executives through individual teams.

  • Second language desirable e.g. French and/or Italian.
